Key takeaways
- Market orders seek immediate execution against available liquidity.
- Limit orders set a price boundary but may remain open or partially fill.
- Fast markets and thin liquidity can change the average execution price of a market order.
- Order type can affect maker/taker classification, but a limit order is not automatically maker.

Market orders use the liquidity available now
A crypto market order seeks immediate execution against orders already on the book. If the order is large relative to available liquidity, it can fill across multiple price levels rather than at one displayed price.
Limit orders set a boundary
A buy limit states the maximum price you are willing to pay; a sell limit states the minimum price you are willing to accept. The order can remain open if the market never reaches a matching price.
Visual explainer
Market vs limit
Market
- Execution first
- Price can move across the book
- Usually taker
Limit
- Price boundary
- May not fill
- Maker or taker depending on execution
Order type and fee type can interact
Coinbase Advanced explains that an immediately filled order is taker, while an order resting on the book can be maker when it later matches. This is why fee comparison should follow execution rather than assuming every limit order receives a maker rate.
Before submitting an order
Review the trading pair, side, quantity, order type and fee preview. For limit orders, check the limit price and any duration setting. For market orders, look at available liquidity and the platform's estimated total before confirmation.
