Key takeaways
- Maker orders add liquidity to an order book; taker orders remove available liquidity.
- A market order is normally a taker because it seeks immediate execution.
- A limit order can still be a taker if it matches immediately.
- Fee tiers and rates can change, so check the order preview and current exchange schedule.

Maker and taker describe execution, not the button you pressed
On an order-book exchange, a maker order rests on the book and adds available liquidity. A taker order matches liquidity that is already available. Coinbase's Advanced fee documentation, for example, says immediately filled orders pay the taker fee while orders that remain on the book can pay the maker fee when matched.

Why a limit order is not automatically maker
A buy limit placed at a price that can immediately match an existing sell order may execute straight away and be treated as taker. A limit order that does not immediately match can rest on the book and become maker when another order trades against it.
Fee tiers add another variable
Some exchanges vary maker and taker rates with rolling trading volume or account tier. Coinbase Advanced states that its fee tier is determined at the time of the order and tiers update based on trading volume. Treat any displayed rate as time-sensitive.
How to compare maker/taker schedules
Compare the execution path you expect to use, not simply the lowest number in a fee table.
- Check the maker and taker definitions.
- Check the volume period used for tiers.
- Check whether the quoted schedule applies in Australia.
- Look for minimums or other transaction charges.
- Verify the current rate immediately before trading.
