“$0 brokerage”, free trades, cash vouchers and reward points are powerful marketing messages. They can also compress a complicated decision into one attractive number.
ASIC’s 2026 online-broker surveillance specifically noted that some providers use fee-free or discounted trading or incentives such as cash vouchers and airline reward points. The regulator’s concern was not that every incentive is automatically improper. The broader issue is that excitement around an offer can distract from product risk and encourage impulsive trading.
Zero brokerage is not the same as zero cost
A trading fee is only one possible cost. Depending on the market and provider, an investor may need to consider foreign-exchange conversion, spreads, account or platform charges, transfer fees, market-data charges or costs embedded in the product itself. Conditions can also determine which trades qualify for advertised pricing.
Ask what you receive in return for the incentive
Before opening an account for a bonus, read the eligibility period, minimum deposit or trading requirements, expiry rules and any conditions that could change normal behaviour. If an offer pushes you to trade sooner or more often than you otherwise would, the incentive can become economically irrelevant compared with investment losses or additional costs.
Use a cost scenario instead of a slogan
Model a realistic trade size and frequency. A flat brokerage amount can be material on a small trade and relatively minor on a large one. International shares may add currency conversion. A provider with a higher visible brokerage fee can have a different overall cost structure from a provider advertising zero brokerage.
Trading Guide’s calculators are estimates, not live quotes. They are useful for understanding how a fee rule behaves, but current pricing should always be checked on the provider’s official website.
Five things to verify
- The exact transactions that qualify for the advertised rate.
- FX conversion methodology for overseas markets.
- Whether spreads or product-level costs apply.
- How investments are held and transferred.
- When the promotion ends and what pricing applies afterwards.
