Australia’s CHESS modernisation program continued through several concrete milestones in 2026, including Release 1 activity, Release 2 testing and new resilience planning.
ASX says CHESS Release 1 cutover was completed in April 2026. On 6 July it made Release 2 Drop 2 functionality available in the Industry Test Environment, allowing software providers to resume build and test activity. On 3 August ASX announced completion of Milestone 1 under the CHESS Project Partnership Program. In September it invited organisations to register for an industry-wide cyber-driven resilience exercise scheduled for May 2027.
Why everyday investors should care
CHESS sits behind important clearing, settlement and sub-register functions in the Australian market. Most retail investors do not interact with the infrastructure directly, but reliable settlement and accurate holding records are fundamental to the market experience.
Release 1 and Release 2 are different
ASX describes Release 1 as clearing and Release 2 as settlement and sub-register work. That distinction matters because a headline saying “CHESS replacement” can make a multi-stage infrastructure program sound like a single switch-over event.
Does this change what a HIN means today?
The project does not remove the need for investors to understand their current holding arrangement. If a platform uses CHESS sponsorship, learn how the HIN and sponsorship arrangement works. If it uses custody or another structure, read that provider’s terms and understand who holds the asset and how transfers work.
What to watch next
Useful signals include ASX’s published roadmap, testing updates, external assurance reports and participant readiness communications. For retail investors, the practical approach is to follow official ASX updates rather than treating implementation speculation as a change to current account rights.
