Key takeaways
- A trading fee and a spread are different cost concepts.
- A quoted buy or sell price can include a spread even when the explicit trading fee is low or waived.
- Execution paths can differ inside the same platform, so simple-buy and order-book pricing should not be assumed equivalent.
- Use the order preview and official pricing disclosure for the transaction you are actually considering.

Trading fee vs spread
A trading fee is an explicit charge attached to a transaction. A spread is the difference between prices around a market or between a reference price and the price quoted for execution. They should not be collapsed into one label.
Coinbase's Australian pricing disclosure is a useful concrete example: it says simple buy and sell quotes include a spread, while Coinbase Advanced interacts directly with the order book and does not include that spread. That does not make either path universally cheaper; it shows why the execution path must be identified before comparing costs.
Spread is not the same as slippage
Slippage describes a difference between an expected price and the price at which an order actually executes. It can be affected by liquidity and market movement. A platform spread, an explicit fee and slippage are therefore separate ideas even though each can affect the economic result of a trade.

Three different cost ideas
Trading fee
- Explicit transaction charge
- Can be flat, percentage or tiered
Spread
- Difference around a quoted market price
- May be embedded in a buy/sell quote
Slippage
- Execution differs from expected price
- Can move with liquidity and volatility
Read the order preview, not just the marketing headline
Before confirming a transaction, inspect the amount of crypto you receive, the quoted asset price, any explicit fee and the total amount paid. Coinbase says its applicable fees and spread information are shown in the trade preview for relevant transactions.
- Identify the execution path: simple/instant buy, market order, limit order or advanced/order-book trade.
- Look for an explicit transaction fee.
- Look for spread or quoted-price disclosures.
- Do not assume a missing numeric spread means zero spread.
- Compare like with like across providers.
How TradingGuide Australia handles this
TradingGuide Australia keeps fee categories and execution paths separate. Where a provider publishes a variable or context-dependent cost, the safer presentation is 'variable' or 'not verified' rather than manufacturing a single percentage. This makes comparisons less tidy, but more faithful to the evidence.
